A Network of Excellence forging the
Multilingual Europe Technology Alliance

Collaboration Agreement between Atlas and META-NET

The Network of Excellence “Technologies for the Multilingual European Information Society”, henceforth META-NET, and the ICT-PSP project ATLAS, both established within Framework Programme 7, recognise the complementarity of their objectives and declare their intent for multi-level collaboration.

Scope and Objectives of the Participants

The overall aim of the ATLAS project is to facilitate organizations and individuals who manage and publish multilingual content. The consortium of ATLAS will adjust and integrate several existing software components, assembling a platform for multilingual web content management called ATLAS, and a visualization layer called i-Publisher, which adds to the platform a powerful web-based point-and-click tool for building, reusing and managing multilingual content-driven web sites. I-Publisher also will be used to build two thematic content-driven web sites – i-Librarian and EUDocLib. These project solutions will not merely meet the needs of modern multilingual content management, but also create value for all users.

META-NET is a Network of Excellence dedicated to the technological foundations of the European multilingual information society. Its main goals are: to build a strategic alliance of national and international research programmes, corporate users and commercial technology providers and language communities; to strengthen the European research community through research networking and by creating new schemes and structures for sharing resources, that is the META-SHARE infrastructure; and to build bridges by approaching open problems in collaboration with other research fields such as machine learning, social computing, cognitive systems, knowledge technologies and multimedia content. META-NET will lead to a strong language technology community with ties to other R&D communities, with a network into industry and public administration, and with visions and plans for a strategic research agenda, to support the sustainability of the European, multilingual information society.

Areas of collaboration

Both ATLAS and META-NET have work items related to machine translation. META-NET is focusing on various areas of advancing MT in general: Semantics and MT, Hybrid MT, context and MT, and the empirical base for MT. In contrast, ATLAS is applying machine translation technologies for multilingual content management, with tasks like fine-tuning of existing translation models.

Based on the complementary relation between the two projects, the following areas of collaboration are defined within this agreement.

  • Atlas will examine the possibility of employing tools undertaken in META-NET related to the advancement of machine translation and analyse how the results can be integrated in ATLAS’ machine translation component.

  • Both projects may envisage a joint publication about the above topic until the end of 2011.

  • ATLAS will provide access to tools and language models being developed via the META-SHARE infrastructure, in addition to ATLAS’ project specific dissemination channels.

  • ATLAS will participate in major META-NET events like META-FORUM 2011.
