A Network of Excellence forging the
Multilingual Europe Technology Alliance

Collaboration Agreement between "Let's MT" and META-NET

The Network of Excellence “Technologies for the Multilingual European Information Society”, henceforth META-NET, funded by DG INFSO of the European Commission (EC) under Framework Programme 7, and the the ICT-PSP project “Platform for Online Sharing of Training Data and Building User Tailored MT”, henceforth LetsMT!, recognise the complementarity of their objectives and declare their intent for multi-level collaboration.

Scope and Objectives of the Participants

LetsMT! is a project which will provide MT solutions for European citizens and businesses allowing more efficient usage of multilingual content. Specifically, it proposes to build an innovative online collaborative platform for data sharing and MT building. LetsMT! will extend the use of existing state-of-the-art SMT methods that will be applied to data supplied by users to increase quality, scope and language coverage of machine translation. The LetsMT! solution will be based on appropriate industry standards to ensure interoperability and easy integration. The LetsMT! platform will target the localisation and translation industry content (language services providers, enterprises and organisations with multilingual content, freelance translators, etc), and the audience of business and financial news; at the same time, it will be of interest for a variety of users: web users in general, speakers of less-covered languages, academic community and others. Thus it will contribute significantly towards uptake of existing ICT for the benefit of the public interest, including individuals as well as businesses.

META-NET is a Network of Excellence dedicated to the technological foundations of the European multilingual information society. Its main goals are: to build a strategic alliance of national and international research programmes, corporate users and commercial technology providers and language communities; to strengthen the European research community through research networking and by creating new schemes and structures for sharing resources, that is the META-SHARE infrastructure; and to build bridges by approaching open problems in collaboration with other research fields such as machine learning, social computing, cognitive systems, knowledge technologies and multimedia content. META-NET will lead to a strong language technology community with ties to other R&D communities, with a network into industry and public administration, and with visions and plans for a strategic research agenda, to support the sustainability of the European, multilingual information society.

Areas of collaboration

META-NET, through META-SHARE tries to build an ecosystem in the language resource production and distribution area. META-NET and LetsMT! agree that, when LetsMT! results will be made available to the language technology community in the terms expressed in the LetsMT! Grant Agreement 250456, META-SHARE will be used as one of the channels to make these results public and accessible. To this end, LetsMT! partners agree that in respect to the public shareable language resources created by LestMT!:

  1. LetsMT! will either establish a local (partner-site-resident) repository of its own using META-SHARE or other appropriate software package, OR will deposit its language resources to a META-SHARE non-local repository.

  2. Whenever feasible, LetsMT! will describe its resources using the META-SHARE metadata schema or will provide mappers from its own schema to the META-SHARE one.

  3. Whenever feasible, LetsMT! will export its metadata and allow their harvesting by the META-SHARE central servers, thus populating the META-SHARE central inventory and making its resources visible and accessible through META-SHARE.

  4. LetsMT! will test and use the META-SHARE facility (software, metadata schema, etc), provide feedback and report bugs to the META-SHARE development team.

  5. LetsMT! will provide their additional user requirements to META-SHARE for discussion, adoption and implementation, or they provide integratable software tools implementing additional services.

The parties agree to further elaborate concrete areas and mutual objectives on which to collaborate, and plans for implementing this.
