I think Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a powerful tool for transnational integration within Europe. A lot of people are able to speak more than one language but a greater number of Europeans are able to understand more than one language (usually one close to the primary language).

Reaching a good quality with automatic machine translation being very difficult, I think three other multilingual functions are better suited for short term commercial applications: 1) Cross lingual information retrieval, 2) multilingual document dispatching and 3) half-automatic machine translation.
